Week Ahead – 50 Year Mortgage stirs drama before short week 📅 🏠🧾
WEEK AHEAD 🗓️
----------------
Tell me if you heard this one before:
“Critical data could be delayed if the government shutdown continues.”
It is a short week with Veteran’s Day on Tuesday, and no meaningful economic data scheduled on Monday, yet volatility could be waiting for us at the end of the week.
That is, of course, if an agreement is made to end the longest-ever government shutdown, which will enter its 41st day on Monday.
Should the government re-open this week the scheduled data might still be delayed.
Otherwise, Thursday would be the CPI inflation report and Friday is the Producer Price Index.
The latter is a more forward-looking indicator of where consumer inflation could be headed based on producer input costs, which generally get passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices.
However, as we know from the last 5 weeks there is a good chance that none of this information hits the tape.
See the attached Mortgage Rate Impact Calendar – events marked blue could be delayed by the shutdown.
News about the shutdown was absent on Saturday.
What did get a stir this weekend, and will likely continue to be a hot topic, was a tweet by U.S. Director of Federal Housing, Bill Pulte.
Pulte reposted an image that Donald Trump shared on his Truth Social.
The image implied a 50-Year mortgage was in the works, to which Pulte replied.
“Thanks to President Trump, we are indeed working on The 50 year Mortgage - a complete game changer.”
The internet (Twitter/X) erupted in “spirited” debate about the pros and cons of the idea.
What are your thoughts? Do you think a 50-Year mortgage loan is a good idea?
Stay tuned, Monday I will take a deeper look at how mortgage rate prices, bond spreads, and longer-term trends are unfolding in my Mortgage Rate Data Deluge.
The latest Lock-O-Meter risk scores and rate lock recommendations will be posted with it.
Thanks for reading.
